Frohe Weihnachten

BOTFA was on TV yesterday but I could not face all that death at the end! I would recommend cutting it off while things are still going well. [smiles]

I think we will stop for today after we finished ‚Desolation of Smaug‘ and tomorrow might be a good day for a wee cry….still haven’t seen the extended version of BOTFA…

… very shortly before the premiere, and I think I remember him saying that he cut a lot toward the end to make the film a watchable length and he wasn’t sure he made the right decision. Almost everything in the extended edition is either more CGI destruction (which I think was a good choice) or more time for the secondary dwarrow, a lot of which was funny or corny, and I feel like maybe some of that could have been left in just to make the film less heavy). Will be interested to hear what you thought about the EE.

YES! The BOTFA premiere was five years ago this winter and I feel like there is still stuff I haven’t processed about that film in particular. (Partially because it was so sad, and now I read all this fanfic with the tag „Everybody lives / Nobody dies.“) I think I still have a folder somewhere with saved interviews or something.

@Servetus: Yeah, I am sure I haven’t watched all of the stuff too. I wasn’t able to watch the EE for this reason, so sad and i haven’t felt strong enough for the burial scene. But now it somehow feels okay to watch it. But I might ask you for some of that FF afterwards 😉

I was just thinking I have maybe only seen BOTFA ten times or so, whereas I’ve seen the other two at least three dozen times each. It might be the longer I put off seeing it again, the more I dread it … well, anyway. Can definitely send FF recs when you want them 🙂

@Servetus: Understandable. While watching the first two I really enjoyed RA a lot, but also felt sadness because so less came from that movies afterwards for him in regards of watchable, suitable for the masses productions. Ah well….

LOL. I thought it was interesting when he said that he wasn’t really prepared for the requirements of the big press junket. But I think it’s also true in my own life that what I wanted in 2004 is not what I want now. Maybe his ambitions have changed. However, I totally agree that we’re unlikely to ever understand him, at least with the sources of information we have at the moment.

@Servetus: Wow, did he say that recently? Maybe, but I am not sure if that matters now.
I don’t think that’ll ever change. Not the right word, but I think he isn’t ‚honest‘ enough to tell what’s really on his mind and even if he seemed a bit more open lately old habits die hard I guess…

Yeah — sometime this year, in fact. I don’t think it matters either, i.e., I suspect if he got the role he really wanted he’d force himself somehow. It seemed to me more like he just didn’t enjoy it that much. A bit like cons — if he’d really loved them he’d have been doing them for a while. And now I suspect that will be significantly different for several more years.

re: to some extent, I wonder if he always even knows what’s on his mind, even previous to saying it. I agree he’s so guarded that even now it doesn’t seem like he’s moved very far.

@Servetus: If he mostly does what he wants I am really happy for him, but for me as a fan his choices are not that ideal and that’s what made it really hard to be an fan for the last few years in the first place. As you know because we talked about it before…
Still not sure what to think (and feel) about the convention thing. And hopefully I won’t forget how it went the last time I talked about it in public and not talk about it ever again (here or on Twitter) 😉

Yeah, I mean…everyone might contradict oneself once in a while but he constantly seems so inconsistent and that for me creates the impression of some sort of ‚immatureness‘ that puzzles me. RA the being from another galaxy 😉

LOL about discussing the con. I watched Twitter and I think seeing that play out was a significant turning point for me. I didn’t realize it at the time but it became clear about a year later.

@Servetus: Turning point for what? Your fangirling? Your opinion about other fans? Or RA?

  29. Servetus schreibt:

Opinions about other fans (which in turn had been affecting my fangirling a lot). I think there was a connection to my feelings about RA there, too, but it would be hard to sketch in just a few sentences. Maybe the thing to say is that it was easier to like Armitage with an honest assessment of his strengths and faults once I gradually separated myself from the Twitter fandom. The con was the beginning point of that process (which I almost didn’t realize was happening). I just remember having this overwhelming feeling of revulsion that lasted for days (and I didn’t understand why, at least not immediately).

For me this was one of the topics where I always feel like speaking chinese when I talk about it to a lot of other fans. Because I never seem to be able to transport what I want to say about it before the screaming and name calling begins (for things I haven’t said at all) *sigh*
I thought about it a lot yesterday and came to the conclusion that the speechlessness maybe is the reason why I can’t conclude the RA business. To much to say left in my head to put an end to all of it…

I think there are a lot of people in the Twitter fandom (naming no names) who intentionally bait other fans to start fights, and where this used to be an occasional thing it is now a regular pattern.

We were mostly immune to that in the blogosphere, maybe because the bloggers had more substantial identities and you knew you were talking to a person who was in a shared web of relationships with you, so if you started a fight with someone there were potential consequences. In contrast, on Twitter the penalty for saying what you wanted was more severe because there were always people there who were more than ready to start a fight and others who were more than ready to jump on the bandwagon with them (in part because there are very few strong relationships visible there, and so a lot of people didn’t think twice about saying horrible things). I had an incident like that this year where someone who I thought I had a very long-term fan relationship with, and with whom I thought i had a good understanding, just attacked me full in the face when I expressed an opinion (that she didn’t even bother to read or understand), and that finally made me say „no more of this.“ I now use Twitter only (a) to get information quickly from time to time; (b) to quickly share a link with someone when that is the most convenient way to communicate; (c) to share my opinions with people with whom I have no relationship.

I don’t follow RA or many fans of his there anymore, that seems to be helping. And as I don’t engage there much in fangirling my feed has gotten a bit boring re conversations but it also saved me from high blood presure and anger wrinkles
