@Servetus: I like the old movies with Ustinov and the tv show with Suchet. But the trailer for the Branagh movies looks a bit cartoonish to me so I haven’t watched it yet…

Thanks. It’s 150 mi away from us, but there have been a few demonstrations here in town with a little violence. I think what’s most worrying isn’t the minor stuff that happens here but the fact that in a situation like the current one, police officers still felt it appropriate to react with violence in a situation like that. I’ve been on the fence about „defunding“ (I’ve tended toward the „reform“ crowd), but it’s a demonstration that the police simply can’t be trusted. It’s not a question of „bad apples.“ This is clearly their trained response.
And, I mean, it’s Wisconsin. We’d just prefer not to be noticed.

@Servetus: Yeah, it seems this kind of response has deep roots within the law inforcement community 😦
I saw a recent interview with Bryan Stevenson that touched defunding or reforming the police and I thought his answer was quite convincing. Police has to deal often with addicts or mental ill people and they aren’t trained for that. So it would make sense to take some of the police funds to give to projects or people who are trained to deal with that kind of thing and empower those and get a real impact.
And train the police different of course, but that will take a long time I guess.

The problem for me with what’s being proposed is that imo none of it accounts for the permeation of our society with guns. So yes, I agree that it would be better for mental health professionals to respond to mental health calls, but you always have to assume that gunplay is a potential risk. Until we get gun violence under control, you’re putting people who are essential untrained in combat in a potential quasi-combat situation. Ideally we’d have more money for preventative measures of various kinds (drug rehab, mental health programs, after school programs for kids, etc., etc.) in addition to whatever the police need. But until the guns are out of people’s hands, it seems like the current situation inevitably leads to circumstances where the responders (whoever they are) have to be armed.
I was out dealing with some stuff for dad and just saw the news. Seems like we’ve got another Dylann Roof on our hands. I better stop saying „I don’t know how things could get any worse“ because it seems to be jinxing things.

Obwohl ich im Moment um Trailer einen großen Bogen mache, konnte ich bei dir nun doch nicht widerstehen. Ammonite ist für mich der reizvollste Film, Cormoran Strike das TV-Event (worauf ich allerdings dann wieder jahrelang warten muss, meh.) Aber wie das mit Kino gehen soll, steht ja auch noch in den Sternen.

*sigh* WHenever I hear some bad news I think ‚this should be the lowest point, things have to get better now!‘ but yeah, it really seems to jinx it and more bad news pile up 😦

@Guylty: Ich habe auch keine Ahnung, wann ich mich wieder ins Kino traue. Daher in ich auch gar nicht so böse, dass der Starttermin für ‚The King’s Man‘ nun nochmal (auf 2021) verschoben wurde – auch wenn ich mich auf diesen Film wirklich sehr, sehr freue.
Strike kann hoffentlich das tolle Niveau halten, immer wieder schön, den Beiden zuzusehen. Und ich bin auch auf das neue Buch gespannt (ob die Beiden nun ein richtiges Paar werden?)…
Ammonite hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen, aber ich sehe die beiden Damen auch richtig gern und James McArdle ist ein zusätzlicher Bonus 🙂

Just saw „Judas and the Black Messiah“ last night on DVD. All I can say is „wow.“ Daniel Kaluuya is beyond talented.

I didn’t feel like I needed the cinema for the film. Also, if you watch it in Originalfassung, I recommend turning on the subtitles.

I don’t know if it’s the vocabulary as much as the delivery (if that makes any sense). I turned them on for about the first fifteen minutes until I was sure I was understanding what they were saying. On that note: Kaluuya is totally transformed into Fred Hampton — you would never know in a million years that he was not from Chicagoland (although I think Kaluuya makes him a little more „ghetto“ than Hampton was originally was). But at the same time, part of his performance is a really intense, at times over the top delivery. So the rhythm of his speech at times makes him hard to understand.
