Thriller, Horror etc…
Aber witzig wie unterschiedlich die Geschmäcker sind. Einige Regionalkrimies finde ich einfach göttlich.

Totally with you on horror, dystopias and (most) fantasy. I like the Scandinavian crime novels a lot, but agree with you partially on German regional crime novels.
I don’t enjoy novels that are extremely sentimental or romantic. I’ve also learned in the last year or two that much of what is praised in the literary press doesn’t float my boat much — it seems to lack heart.

Herba, I am a Happy ending junkie so any romance novels I flock to. Spy novels I have garnered a taste for now. No horror and dystopian, and HP stuff (sorry I know I know) I like real life. I highly recommend Seville Communion. IMO the writing is fantastic and F Quart is a dream boat!!!

Liebesromane.

@Servetus: In which language do you read the Scandinavian ones?
Do you have an example of bad german regional crime novels? (That’s me being curious)

@Michele: Onve in a while I like a good romance but I can’t read as much of them as I did earlier any more – too much fluff isn’t good for me these days 😉
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have it at home and I am sure I’ll read it at some point

Herba, yes I understand totally, I just ordered Their Lost Daughters off Amazon yesterday to read. I do not do kindle, I am an old fashion book reader and I am waiting for Guylty’s recommendation Sunne in Splendour to come in some time this week fro Amazon. I like romance b/c it is an escape drug for me and I love happy endings. It is not realistic and a false fantasy I completely admit but for me it seems necessary at the moment to find some happiness in romance books which is sorely lacking in real life.

Amusingly — for years and years I read the Scandinavian novels in German — I read all of Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell and Arnaldur Indriðason and Anne Holt, etc., that way. They weren’t translated into English and they were available in German translation, in every train station in Germany. Odds are if you want to read a crime novel that hasn’t been translated into English there will be a German translation. I don’t really remember any Regionalkrimis in particular that I didn’t care for; I have a vague memory of one that plays in Cologne, maybe a series, that was really popular, that I didn’t like. I think it’s really difficult to write Heimatromane that aren’t horribly kitschy, period.

And there’s a series from southern Germany that I read one of and thought was horrible — but there are a lot of titles in the series so obviously they must sell well. The Allgäu maybe?

Obviously I’m procrastinating, but now all kinds of German-language Krimis that I did enjoy are popping into mind. One is a Göttingen novel — Grobecks Grab by Wolf Dietrich. I think there are more in that series — i read it a few years after I moved away, but it seemed realistic to me. I also liked Marek Krajewski’s Breslau titles, although I suppose they must have been written in Polish; but they are about the interwar/Nazi period, I liked Christian v. Ditfurth’s books that play at the Hamburg Uni and also the Selb novels by Bernhard Schlink. I liked the Jakob Arjouni novels that I read, but I never got around to Happy Birthday Türke. I am not a big fan of Volker Kutscher although I keep meaning to watch Babylon Berlin.

@Drachen: Jup!

@Servetus: Maybe the series from Rita Falk? The first one is named: ‚Winterkartoffelknödel‘. There are now movies too – horrible!!!

@Servetus: A lot of books I have not and will probably never read 🙂 but I liked the first two seasons of ‚Babylon Berlin‘

My German Studies / History friends were all thrilled about Babylon Berlin (and most quit Berlin Station after season 1). It’s just: Netflix. I think I’m starting to develop a hangup about it. They send me an email every night asking my why I am not watching.
re: books you won’t read: I feel like there’s just an unending stream of Krimis and most of them are in series. I follow so many of them in English and German, plus two or three in Spanish (I was thinking yesterday I could open a mystery bookstore) and even so there are so many I have no time for and have to walk past at the library when I see them. I would say of the 75 library books I have check out right now probably 40 are Krimis.
