We were watching NASCAR races on TV yesterday and I was thinking about the accent question while the drivers were being interviewed. It’s a definite cultural segment / milieu that watches and participates in that stuff. I hope it ends up being funny and not condescending but I am sure I will wait till this one comes to TV.

@Serv: I have no idea about the NASCAR scene, I only know there is one so I will be able to watch this really unbiased. But there is always the risk that the film makers used the funniest scenes from the movie for the trailer and the whole thing ends up being really unfunny and/or dull

I hate NASCAR but I might watch this because the cast is amazing. I love Adam Driver. And Daniel Craig—he left me speechless!!

It was Memorial Day weekend, so of course we watched the Indy 500 and some NASCAR race (I wasn’t paying very close attention; it might have even been a rerun). IndyCar racing has been an international activity for about half my lifetime, where as NASCAR has branded itself as „real American,“ which seems to mean presenting a caricature of a particular strip of US regionalism. So the commentary and events around each event were different and fascinating to compare. Of course, I’d just been patting myself on the back about how cool it is that a Japanese driver won the 500 and did his victory lap holding a bottle of milk (advertising!) and a Japanese flag, when some dopey sportswriter tweeted his discomfort with a Japanese driver winning it (never mind that since the late 1980s, international drivers have been winning about half the time). Grrr.
Anyway, hope it’s a good film!

@Serv: I have no interest in car racing and so I never saw a real NASCAR race, only scences in movies, but I guess you could watch it here too if you were really interested.
That’s a real ‚weird‘ attitude but I know similar comments about football players *sigh*
Isn’t Ashley Judd’s husband (or ex-husband) an NASCAR driver from Italy?
Thanks! If not at least I can make fun of Mr. Craigs hair and his cute prison jumpsuit 😉

Oh, in a good way! I never imagined he had that much range as an actor, nor the comic chops 🙂

@linnetmoss: Unfortunately his skills as an actor got marginalised when he was cast es Bond, but he is an theatre trained actor and made some really great movies. I will never forget his perfomance as an mentally ill man in ‚Some voices‘ – really heartbreaking!
Ah, I have to dig out some of my dvds and watch my favourites with him in it.

Craig got a bunch of nominations for his Othello with David Oyelowo this last season in NYC — it was one of the shows to see, apparently. (I blew my theater budget on a different play, lol.)

Dad really enjoys it. I tend to find that you can watch the highlights. re: Franchitti — indeed. I think of him as an IndyCar driver but I looked it up and indeed, he had a NASCAR phase.

@Serv: And which play cpuld that have been? *lol*
Yes, I know and I was happy for him, even if I couldn’t decide if the praise came because of Shakespeare and the collaboration with David Oyelowo or really because of his performance – difficult to decide because I haven’t seen it.

@Serv: Yes, highlights from a car race are enough and I am SO happy that I haven’t a Formal 1 fan in my vicinity because for me this ’sport‘ is so dull!
There is a difference between IndyCar and NASCAR? *lol*

I loved him in „Munich“–really a chilling role that opened my eyes to his talent. We saw him onstage in „Betrayal,“ a Harold Pinter play. He was OK in that but didn’t impress. I think he’s strongest onscreen. Some actors are simply very telegenic.

According to my (German) ex, the fascination in Formel 1 lies in the skill of the drivers. (OK.) And re: the difference — an IndyCar is like a Formel 1 race car, whereas NASCAR uses „stock cars,“ i.e., theoretically, cars you could buy on a car lot. In practice, they only look like commercially available cars; they are engineered to a much higher standard now, but they still have the familiar bodies of the kind of sports car anyone could buy.

@linnet: Yes, Munich was great, a small part for him but great!
Ah, now I am little bit jealous 🙂 Was that the play with his wife and Rafe Spall? Haven’t read a lot about this one but would have loved to be able to have watched the play with him and Hugh Jackman!

Yes, the one with Rachel and Rafe. It was underwhelming somehow, but Daniel looked lovely in his tight-fitting suits. Everyone in the play drank like a fish, this being Pinter, and there was no intermission–I felt sorry for the actors LOL. Would have loved to see anything with Hugh Jackman. Especially if DC also is in it 🙂 Double delight!!

@linnet: Ah what a pity! Yes, he rocks nice suits. It’s Tom Ford for the Bond films and he himself praise it whenever he can 🙂
Well DC spotted a big, hairy mustache for it and wasn’t his normal sexy looking self but I would have loved to watch it nevertheless
